Temperatures are dropping fast as we enter the end of November. The serious cold weather is about to start here in the Des Moines area. Have you already arranged to have your residential heating system professionally maintained and checked? If you have, that’s fantastic. (Just make sure that you call for repairs as soon as you notice anything wrong since maintenance cannot stop all problems.)
But if you haven’t arranged for heating maintenance, don’t worry—there’s still time to have the work done, but don’t hesitate. You want to get on the maintenance schedule soon before it becomes too crowded with people who decide to rush to have the job done after the cold weather starts.
Furnace maintenance
Furnaces are the most common kind of heating system found in homes, and gas furnaces are especially in need of annual fall check-ups. This is the best way to make sure that a gas-powered furnace runs safely through the winter with minimal danger of carbon monoxide leaks or combustion hazards.
Boiler maintenance
One of the big advantages of using a boiler for your home heating is that it can last for many years with few repair issues. But this doesn’t mean you can skip maintenance for your boiler! Gas-powered boilers have the same issue as gas-powered furnaces: you want to keep them running safely. Boilers are also at higher risk of corrosion without annual tune-ups and inspections.
Heat pump maintenance
Don’t fall for the common mistake of thinking that a heat pump only requires maintenance once a year. If you’ve already arranged for maintenance for your heat pump in spring, you still need a check-up in fall. The system works throughout the summer, and that means plenty of strain on it that might lead to winter trouble without proper inspection and tune-up.
