It’s That Time Again: Schedule Your Heating Maintenance

You are probably enjoying this warm September in Iowa and soaking up the last heat of the year. We hate to interrupt this idyll with a reminder about your home’s heating system, but this is the ideal season to schedule annual maintenance for your heating in Des Moines, IA, and throughout the Des Moines and Grimes Metro Areas.

Yes, This Maintenance Must Be Done Every Year

Please don’t think of annual heating maintenance as an optional service or a luxury. All HVAC professionals, as well as government agencies, agree that heater maintenance from a trained technician is necessary each fall to ensure peak performance, a long system life, and the safe operation of a residential heating system.

Let’s go through those three points:

Peak Performance

A heating system of any type (gas furnace, boiler, heat pump, ductless mini split) wears down with use. After a solid winter of work, a heater will have accumulated enough strain and dirt to begin to impair how well it works the next time it’s needed.

  • In general, a heater without maintenance needs many more repairs. Around 80% of heater repairs are preventable thanks to maintenance.
  • The extra strain forces the heater to draw on more power to work. Whether you run your heater from electricity, natural gas, or heating oil, expect to pay more for it when the heating system isn’t maintained.
  • Poor performance can also mean no in other words, a heater suddenly shutting down on a cold day. Maintenance is the best “insurance” against this kind of winter comfort catastrophe.

Long System Life

The average service life of a heating system varies depending on the type: heat pumps can last 10 to 15 years, while boilers can sometimes work for 20 years. But whatever the system life expectancy, you can effectively cut it in half by skipping maintenance—and that’s an expensive situation!

Safe Operation

This applies to all heaters, but especially to gas-powered furnaces and boilers. Natural gas furnaces are the most common type of heaters found in homes, and although they aren’t inherently dangerous, there is a higher risk of hazards if they are not maintained by professionals. (And only professionals. It’s illegal for anyone without proper licensing to work on an appliance connected to a gas main.) You can trust maintenance to catch potential safety concerns and have them fixed before the heater has to go to work.
