One of the last problems you want to face during a hot summer day is to have your air conditioning system abruptly break down on you. If you’ve scheduled routine maintenance for it during the spring, there’s a much lower chance of this occurring… but there’s no way to make an AC 100% failure-proof! If your air conditioner stops providing you with cool air, call our HVAC repair expert and we’ll be out to you as fast as we can to restore your AC.

Until we get there, here are a few steps you can take to help from overheating:

  • Keep your body cool: Staying cool isn’t just about lowering the temperature of the air around you. It’s also about keeping your body cool. Drinking plenty of cold liquids will help immensely. You can also wipe yourself down with towels soaked in cold water, or take a lukewarm shower, which will also remove sweat and dirt and make it easier for your body to release heat.
  • Wet sheets over open windows: This is a method for keeping a home cool that goes back to ancient Egypt when people took wet reeds and hung them over windows. A wet sheet will cool down the air that enters your house.
  • Ice cubes + a fan = evaporative cooling: You can create an evaporative AC to help keep places in your house cool with this simple trick. Place ice cubes in a bowl, and then set the bowl before a fan. Instant cool air!
  • Keep lights and appliances off and the windows covered: You want to stop all additional sources of heat in your home, such as incandescent lights. Don’t use the oven or stove and shut down equipment like entertainment systems. Keeping the window blinds down or shutters closed will restrict radiant heat from the sun from getting in.
