Should I Have a New Heat Pump Installed This Fall?

Updated January 23, 2024

Since we discussed replacing furnaces and boilers earlier this month, it only makes sense that we move on to the third of the trio of heating systems that most homes use: the heat pump. If a heat pump is the way you provide winter comfort to your household, right now is a good time to consider if you should have the unit replaced with a new one.

Heat Pump Age

Heat pumps have a shorter life span than either boilers or furnaces, which is why you should keep a close watch on the performance of your heat pump, so you’ll know in time when it needs to be replaced. A well-maintained heat pump usually lasts between 10 to 15 years. After 15 years, you can expect your home’s heat pump to start to lose efficiency, encounter more problems that require repairs, and eventually suffer a breakdown involving the compressor. The compressor is the key part here: when it permanently fails, the heat pump will have to be replaced. Make sure you get ahead of a serious breakdown like this and replace the heat pump sooner rather than later.

Escalating Electrical Costs

The energy efficiency of a heat pump is lower when it’s in heating mode, but this is true throughout the system’s entire lifespan. What you need to watch for is a significant increase in electrical bills over the last winter. If you’ve been diligent about maintaining the heat pump with twice-yearly visits, then an increase like this indicates a system that’s too worn down.

New Higher Efficiency Possibilities

Your old heat pump may be working fine, but you may still want to have it replaced to take advantage of newer systems with higher energy efficiency. The technology of air conditioners and heat pumps is always improving, and if you want to take advantage of a newer system that will save you money, now is the right time to do it.

As always when it comes to a home HVAC system, you want to choose to replace a heat pump with the assistance of professionals. Our technicians can give your heat pump inspection and provide you with the information you need to know about whether a replacement is a good choice for this fall.
