Summer weather is here, even if the official day of summer has yet to arrive. With temperatures rising into the 90s during midday, you probably have your air conditioning system hard at work to keep your household comfortable. If you scheduled annual maintenance for your air conditioning system, then it should be ready to handle the intense summer heat, no matter how high the thermostat climbs. (And if you haven’t scheduled maintenance, it’s not too late! Give us a call today and we’ll arrange it.)

We wish we could tell you that all you’ll ever need to protect your AC from malfunctions is regular maintenance. Of course, that’s not true. Even the best care for a cooling system can’t stop all problems. When your air conditioner starts to act up—or refuses to act, period—it’s time to call our technicians for air conditioning repair service.

But if it’s a small repair, why can’t I do it myself?

For several good reasons. We understand why people want to attempt to fix an AC themselves: they’re looking to save money, and it’s easy to find DIY guidelines on the Internet. However, you must leave AC repairs to licensed professionals for the following reasons:

You don’t want to void the warranty

The warranty on your air conditioner protects you from paying huge amounts to replace it if it breaks down early. But to keep the warranty current, you have to make sure the air conditioner receives proper care. Part of this is scheduling regular maintenance. Another part is never trying to repair it yourself! Most DIY repairs on an AC will void the warranty.

You aren’t qualified to handle refrigerant

Air conditioners are refrigerant-based systems, and repairs often involve sealing refrigerant leaks and recharging refrigerant levels. This is potentially harmful to people and the environment if done wrong, and it is against the law for anyone without proper certification to work on refrigerant systems.

You won’t be able to correctly diagnose the trouble

Because air conditioners are complex pieces of equipment, a single symptom may have multiple causes. Professionals know how to track down the source of a malfunctioning air conditioner so they can make proper repairs. For example, is a drop in cooling power a problem with low refrigerant, a clogged filter, a faulty thermostat, or leaks in the ventilation system? It takes training to find out—so don’t try to guess what’s wrong and do the repairs yourself, because you’ll probably make the wrong repair.

You don’t have the right equipment

Do you have devices to measure refrigerant pressure, proper airflow, and motor amperage in an air conditioner? Not unless you’re an HVAC professional! Only the experts have the right equipment and the knowledge of how to use it.

Professionals are easy to find when you need AC repairs. We offer 24/7 air conditioning repair throughout the greater Des Moines, IA Metro areas.
