Schedule routine HVAC maintenance around extremes of Des Moines weather.

The 2018-2019 winter weather has been memorable in central Iowa, requiring much from heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in homes.

Although the calendar indicates spring is coming, March is still feeling winter-like in Des Moines. Home heating issues may still arise, but the experts at Golden Rule have suggestions for finishing the season and preparing a home’s HVAC system to switch to cooling duties soon.

“If you are having a problem with your HVAC system here at the end of winter, there are few things to check, especially going back to the system’s filter,” said Bobby Johnson, sales and marketing manager at Golden Rule.

Recently, Johnson stressed the importance of regularly changing the system’s filter and suggested checking the filter as a first step when a unit isn’t functioning.

Troubleshooting should also include the HVAC unit’s thermostat.

“Some thermostats have batteries, and although they look like they’re working because the thermostat still shows readouts, the batteries may be too weak to communicate with the furnace or AC,” noted Johnson. “Changing the batteries may be the solution.”

If winter weather kept you from performing outside maintenance, revisit those tasks now, especially with high-efficiency furnaces venting outside the house. Clear remaining snow and ice.

Another item to consider in high-efficiency equipment is the condensation trap which collects moisture that is made and can drip back to the furnace.

“Sometimes the trap will overflow or crack causing water in the furnace. The front panels can be removed to look for water damage,” said Johnson. “If you find this, a Golden Rule technician can fix it!”

The period between winter heating and summer cooling is a perfect time for Golden Rule’s technicians to perform maintenance that supports the long-term life of HVAC equipment.

“Maintenance helps get the most out of your system,” said Johnson.

Maintenance of HVAC systems is available by appointment and is especially easy for members of Golden Rule’s Gold Club. For annual members, Golden Rule’s expert technicians perform two complete system checks each year, covering both the furnace and the air conditioner. The Gold Club Membership is available for $99 and covers 12 months. The program offers front-of-the-line service and negates both trip fees and diagnostics charges. Members also receive ten percent off needed repairs.
