The summer weather is about to become intense, and we can expect many days when the outdoor thermometers will rise into the 90s. And we don’t just deal with extreme heat here in the Des Moines area; we have high humidity to cope with as well, and anybody who’s had to go through a humid summer knows how much less comfortable that can be.

If you frequently deal with high humidity inside your home, leading to unpleasant summer conditions and even water damage, we strongly recommend that you contact us for the installation of a whole-house dehumidifier.

Wait… isn’t my air conditioner enough to take care of humidity?

Not exactly. An air conditioner helps you keep cool, but it becomes more difficult to do that when the humidity is high. The extra level of moisture in the air restricts your body’s ability to release heat through perspiration, making you feel hotter. The AC needs to run longer when humidity is high to help cool you down.

You might have heard that air conditioners have some dehumidifying properties. This is true: ACs draw moisture from the air as they draw heat. But this is not the purpose of an air conditioner, and it’s rarely enough to make a significant difference in your home.

What a whole‑house dehumidifier does

A trained professional integrates a whole-house dehumidifier into the HVAC system, where it uses a process similar to an AC to draw moisture out of the air. A refrigerant coil evaporates cold refrigerant, which causes moisture to condense onto the coil and dry the air. This also cools the air, but the dehumidifier reheats this air so that it won’t interfere with the operation of the air conditioner.

If you are interested in the installation of a whole-house dehumidifier to help out this summer, call on Golden Rule. We service throughout the Des Moines, IA metro area.
