We stress fall maintenance for heating systems for many reasons, not the least of which is that it protects your family’s comfort from an abrupt heater breakdown. Our winters are often intense, and when all that stress is placed on a heater to provide comfort, a system that isn’t prepared can quickly turn into a system that won’t work.
The importance of heating maintenance applies to boilers as much as to furnaces. You might think that a boiler, which has fewer moving parts than a furnace or heat pump, doesn’t need annual maintenance and will make it fine through the winter. But this is incorrect! Boilers need regular maintenance as often as furnaces and heat pumps.
Saving Your Boiler, One Fall Inspection at a Time
It’s true that boilers have longer lifespans than other types of heating systems and suffer from fewer repair issues because of their construction. But boilers have some specific weaknesses as well that can make failure a serious problem. One of them is frozen pipes. Normally a boiler isn’t in danger of freezing because of the heat and the constant flow. But if a boiler stops working entirely, the threat of a freeze—one that will be expensive to fix—becomes higher. You don’t want this happening to your boiler!
Another concern with boilers is the danger of corrosion. Water in contact with metal in the presence of oxygen leads to corrosion; boilers are designed to resist corrosion in several ways, such as glass tank linings and keeping the tank airtight. But these precautions can fail quickly without annual inspections and tune-ups, maybe occasional flushing of the tank.
If you use a natural gas boiler, maintenance is key to keeping the system safe. A natural gas system isn’t inherently dangerous, as long as it’s checked each fall and given a tune-up.
