11 Ways to Make Bath time a Blast for Kids

Updated February 1, 2024

Bath time can be a battle for some kids, and at the end of a long day, that’s the last thing you want. We’ve provided some tips to make this nightly ritual fun for everyone. Rotate your favorites to keep things fresh, and of course, always follow age-appropriate bathroom safety tips.

  1. Make Your Bath Paints
Let your little “paint” the walls and themselves with this tile-safe, no-tears paint. Simply mix 1/3 cup baby shampoo and 1.5 tablespoons of cornstarch, mixing well to remove clumps. Divide into muffin tin cups or ice cube trays and add food coloring to achieve the desired color. Kids can use their fingers, a paintbrush, or a silicone pastry brush to create washable art.
  2. Colored Ice
Freeze colored water in ice cube trays, add them to the bath, and watch the colors slowly melt and disperse throughout the tub.
  3. Pool Noodle Fun
Slice a thin pool noodle into one-inch slices (a bread knife works better than scissors) and add to the bath. Your kids can stack them on the edge, watch them float, try to sink them, aim the spout water through the holes … the possibilities are endless!
  4. Hand Puppets
Sew together two washcloths to make a hand puppet that washes your child. You can sew on felt pieces or use waterproof markers to create faces. Just add silly voices and washing becomes magical!
  5. Plastic Toys
Add a variety of plastic toys to the water and try to guess which ones will float. Kids can play lifeguard to rescue any sinking toys, and it’s a great way to learn about flotation properties.
  6. Bath time Rain
Indoor rain showers can help you rinse your child’s hair. Depending on the child’s age, you can use a plastic garden sprinkler or poke holes in a yogurt container that’s easy for little hands to hold and rinse their hair. A small plastic sun visor also helps keep water from running into their eyes.
  7. Car Wash
While you wash your kid, they can clean their favorite plastic toys. Set up an assembly line for any bath-safe toy such as cars, dolls, or building blocks.
  8. Kitchen Utensils
Use your imagination and break out the kitchen tools. Turkey basters become squirters, slotted spoons make rain, and measuring cups pour water while teaching about volume. Use straws to blow bubbles or propel floating toys around the tub.
  9. Glow in the Dark Bath
Glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark stickers, and submersible lights are fun, but what about making the water itself glow? If you have a black light, there’s an easy, safe, inexpensive solution: tonic water. Tonic water glows blue under black lights, it won’t make the tub sticky, and it’s safe to drink. Just add a 2-liter bottle of tonic water to create an awesome glow.
  10. Water Balloons
Water balloons have a lot of uses. Kids can chase the slippery balloons around the tub and throw them at the walls. You can also fill them with different colors of water and let them guess what color will be inside. (Depending on age, be careful of choking hazards.)
