Golden Rule Back To School Plumbing Tips

Updated January 19, 2024

With school starting again, your family’s schedule will soon be a little more chaotic. Over the last few months, our household plumbing has been stressed to the max. In a family of school-aged children and working adults, competition for the bathroom in the morning can be fierce. Shower backups, humidity, and mold can all be a problem when the bathrooms see heavy use by multiple people day in and day out. To make back-to-school time a little easier on you and your family, below are some plumbing tips from our pros at Golden Rule.

Stagger Shower Times

Back-to-back showers put a lot of pressure on your home’s water heater. You can avoid running out of hot water in the mornings by staggering the shower times or setting a time limit on each individual’s shower time.

Clear Your Drains

Using the shower and bathtub several times in succession can lead to drain backups if your drains aren’t properly maintained. Some of the most common sources of drain clogs include hair, dirt, and soap scum. With heavy shower use, these items tend to build up and form blockages in our drains. To avoid clogged shower drains, it’s a good idea to schedule routine drain cleaning.

Always Run the Bathroom Fan

Bathroom fans are designed to control the level of moisture in the bathroom. With your whole family using the showers a bit extra during back-to-school time, moisture levels in the bathroom can get out of control. Too much moisture can lead to problems such as mold and mildew growth, which creates a very unhealthy living environment for your family. Make sure your fan is always turned on while the shower is in use and for a few minutes afterward.

Replace Your Old Water Heater

Do you never seem to have enough hot water? Is your water pressure weak? Does your water change from cold to burning hot frequently? If you have had your water heater for 10 years or more and it is no longer working as well as it should be, it is time to replace it.

Some of the benefits of replacing your old water heater include:

  • Better energy efficiency
  • A larger supply of hot water
  • Fewer repairs
  • Lower fuel costs
  • Enhanced comfort

Replace your old, inefficient water heater to make sure your entire family always has access to plenty of warm water.
