Ways to Tell You Need to Install a New Toilet

Updated February 5, 2024

The bathroom is the room in your house that uses the most water. The toilet alone can account for 30 to 40% of all water consumption in a house during a year. However, people are often content to make only a few minor changes to this room, allowing the plumbing to deteriorate slowly. You may eventually want to have a complete bathroom remodel (a service we offer) to improve it. But one of the first steps you can take with an older bathroom is to replace the aging toilet. This is a job that you must entrust to a licensed plumber.

Several warning signs will tell you that it’s time to leap onto this replacement sooner rather than later. Below are some of the ways to tell that it’s time to give our plumbers a call and arrange for a new toilet installation.

Cracked porcelain

If you notice cracking along the porcelain of the bowl or the tank of the toilet, you almost certainly need a replacement: either the bowl or the whole unit. These cracks will only worsen, leading to leaks that can ruin your floors and create mold and mildew.

Repeated repair needs

Toilets will require occasional repairs over their lifespans. But if you find that you’re making calls for repairs one after the other (replace the flapper, worn out gaskets, broken handle, broken fill valve) it’s wiser to simply have a new toilet put in.

Wasted water

With almost a third of your water use going to the toilet, you don’t want an older unit that wastes 6 gallons on each flush. Newer toilets, even ones that aren’t designed as low-flow models, use far less water per flush and will help you save on water bills.
